Let’s Look: Worst Habits

Hey everyone! Happy Wednesday! I hope you have been having a great week. Last weekend I ran my first 5K and Iā€™ll be sharing more about what I learned about myself while training and how I prepared for it next week. Since itā€™s the second week of the month, I like to link up with ErikaĀ andĀ Shay. for Letā€™s Look. Hereā€™s some of the past things we looked at through the year.Ā

In July, we talked about new favorite summer finds, in June,Ā we talked aboutĀ best travel tips, in May, we talked about ourĀ morning routines, in April, we talked aboutĀ pet peeves,Ā in March, we talked aboutĀ Amazon purchases,Ā in February it was aboutĀ our medicine cabinets.

Today, itā€™s all about worst habits which is similar to the biggest pet peeves prompt from April, but I decided to change it up and switch up my responses. When I first saw the prompt, I knew I could think of a list of bad habits or things that Iā€™m not good at, which shows me how hard we can be on ourselves.

Rather than give you a list of bad qualities, I decided to choose three bad habits I have and how I want to work on them.

Hereā€™s what I came up with:

Over planning– I am a Type A person through and through. I like lists, planners, a schedule and direction and I like it way in advance. But, as I have learned, life doesnā€™t work that way and you have to adapt and adjust, often or on the fly. Sometimes, I tend to over plan and then when things stray or change, I get thrown in a tail spin which is not good. I will also stress out about things that are out of my control. I will get anxious about something that is days, weeks or months away or may not even happen. I sometimes get so focused on it and get tunnel vision and then it may not even happen. Iā€™m also really working on not overbooking things in advance and instead being more open and flexible to plans and things falling into place. Itā€™s way easier said than done. Iā€™m also working (which I have been for years) on being more spontaneous to making plans with friends and family. It hasnā€™t been easy but Iā€™m doing my best.Ā

A look at my overly organized planner and to do lists.

Neat freak– I am a neat freak, control freak, everything has a home freak through and through. I love to clean, I love to make sure dishes are put away at the end of the day and all the laundry is folded and hampers are empty. I have been known to clean and put away dishes and cups when people are still using them. However, living with five other people, I know the house isnā€™t always in perfect condition. I try my best to let the little things go and give myself grace, but that doesnā€™t always happen. I love the sense of satisfaction of clean space which I alway try to leave room at home and desk at work in good shape whenever I leave, so when I come back, everything is fresh and clean. Growing up in a large family you get used to chaos, disorder and messes and itā€™s all a part about being in a family and I wouldnā€™t change it.

Getting sucked into ā€œSales and Free Itemsā€– I enjoy shopping and I always love a good deal. However, I am guilty about buying things to get a sale or discount or to get something free when I donā€™t need it in the first place. For example, I will get emails like many other people about getting a free item/drink/side with a purchase and I will want to take advantage of the offer, because I would get something free too. However, do I need to buy something in the first place? Probably not. I fall victim to spending more sometimes to get a free item or free shipping when I probably didnā€™t need the item in the first place (Iā€™m looking at you Bath and Body Works and Chipotle!) I will say that McDonaldā€™s app and deals are ones that are consistent and worth the free items or discounts. However, most times, I realize I probably didnā€™t need to buy the item to get something free to begin with. I have gotten a lot better at simply deleting the email unless itā€™s something I absolutely need. However, I am guilty of spending when I donā€™t need to be spending haha!

An example of an email that I try to delete and not give into

I think as I have gotten older, I have seen these habits come out more, they arenā€™t necessarily bad, but when you take them to the extremes or become obsessed then you have to reign it in a bit.

My biggest takeaways as I have grown up is that itā€™s all about moderation and not going to extremes of being a neat freak or over planned or stressing out about things out of your control, what it comes down to for me is about being more flexible and adaptable and less rigid. Iā€™m a work in progress and Iā€™m proud of that. Iā€™m sure if you ask my friends and family about what my worst habits are, they can can give you a full list of other things, but these are big areas I that hope to work on as I grow older.

Now, that I have opened up, tell me, what are some of your bad habits? They can be big or small! Let me know in the comments below!

Managing Stress

Hello everyone! I hope your week is off to a great start as your summers get underway. Although the summer months are filled with fun, adventures, and lots of time outside but it also means a change of routine which can cause lots of stress. Whether you have a high stress job or pockets of stress in your life, thereā€™s always things to do to manage or lower your stress.

Here are some of my top tips for managing stress.

  • When life gets to be a lot, write it down.

I always feel better when I write my to do list or whatā€™s on my mind down, I always feel a lot better, plus when I see it all written down, it makes everything a lot more manageable. I also journal every day and that helps me reflect on the good every day and puts things in perspective too. I always start my day off with journaling and my daily prayers. When I start my day off with my routine

  • Get outside

Whenever a situation gets overwhelming or stressful, I find it helpful to take a walk or get outside and just get some fresh air. Even if itā€™s just for 10 minutes, it makes a big difference. The sunshine makes it even better to get outside and just process things.

Going on walks is a favorite of mine
  • Talk it Out

I always feel better after I talk about my stressors or pain points with someone, whether itā€™s my mom or best friend. It always makes me feel better just to talk out whatā€™s going on instead of bottling it up inside.

  • Create a relaxing atmosphere

Especially at the end of a stressful day, I like to create a soothing and relaxing atmosphere. Whether itā€™s burning some candles or using some essential oils, I like to cultivate a space that I can truly unwind and relax.

I saw this on Instagram and I couldn’t agree more. We all need time to just rest.
  • Breathing exercises

I started to use the Mindfulness feature on my fitbit, it allows me to practice deep breathing whenever I need time to just pause and reset.

My mindfulness app

These are a few tricks that have worked for me. What things do you do to relax or manage your stress?

How to Study for Finals and Prepare for the Holiday Season

Itā€™s the most wonderful time of the yearā€¦.or worst if you are a college student like myself. Finals week is upon us. Time to grab those note cards, pull out the highlighters, and make those study guides. Whether you are studying for finals, or if you arenā€™t a college student, making your Christmas lists, here are some tips to stay organized this time of year.

Studying for Finals:

-Prepare in advance. – Look to see when your finals are scheduled and plan out of when you want to study for them.

Here’s my day planner. I write down every assignment, meeting, and final down so I don’t forget anything.

– Prepare on your own. – Read through both your notes and textbooks and make your own study guide so you arenā€™t going back and forth between book and notebook.

-Seek help. ā€“ Although we donā€™t always like to admit it, we sometimes need help. Go to a tutor if you need help in a subject. See your professor with questions you may have while studying. Organize study groups to make sure you are covering all the information.

-Take Care of Yourself. ā€“ Finals and the end of the semester are stressful. But donā€™t forget to take care of yourself. You wonā€™t do well on a test if you are half a sleep or if you are sick from not eating healthy. It may be tempting but try not to skip meals and allow yourself for enough sleep or take a nap if you need to.

Preparing for Christmas:

I am always on my laptop, these post it icons make it easy for me to remember what things I have going on from finals, homework assignments, and extra things I need to get done. Like my Christmas gifts. I like to have it all in one place

-Make a List (and Check it twice). ā€“ Make a list for everyone you want to buy gifts for. Think relatives, coworkers, friends, any gift exchanges. You donā€™t want to leave anyone out on your list.

-Plan out your Gifts. ā€“ Do some research and plan what gifts you want to purchase and for whom. This saves time walking around a store waiting for the perfect gift to find you.

-Buy then Wrap. ā€“ Get all your purchasing done then wrap your goodies. Put on a Christmas movie and wrap while you relax. Itā€™s easier to wrap everything at one point rather then wrapping things separating at different times.

-Enjoy the Christmas Season. ā€“ The holidays can be stressful but Itā€™s important to remember what really matters; family, friends, Jesus. Take time for the family traditions and make memories.

I hope these tips help with preparing for your finals or your Christmas shopping. Itā€™s the most wonderful time of the year, be sure to spend it well with friends and family.

Finding Happiness Every Day

We have all had those days when itā€™s gloomy outside, our outfit isnā€™t working, we over commit and we are left with nothing but stress. We let everything pile up around us until we are left completely overwhelmed. I may not be able to change the weather or help free your schedule but I can show you where to find happiness every day. These are five easy ways where I find happiness in every day life. We are all humans and mistakes happen and some days are harder than others, but it’s important to remember to stand up again and keep moving forward. I hope this helps you find some happiness in your lives.

  1. Ā Play Good Music. Blast your favorite Ā  Pandora station and dance around. Put on some soothing music when you just need a break. When I really need a pickup up, this is my favorite Pandora station. Sometimes we just need to let go and let God take over.

    My favorite station
  2. Talk to a friend. Whether itā€™s your best friend or your mom (or if thatā€™s the same person), stop the texting and have a phone call or Face Time session. Talk about your latest tv show you both are watching or whatā€™s going on in your lives, or even plan an activity. Whatever you talk about it will take you mind off what you are stressing about. Reminisce and relive your favorite moments.

    Friends always make things better
  3. Read a book. Sometimes we need to step away from everything, even technology. Pick a up book you keep telling yourself you are going to read but havenā€™t started yet. Get lost in a world besides your own. Flip through your favorite magazine. Do something for you.

    My next read
  4. Go for a Walk. Step away from your stressful day and just spend time thinking and being one with nature. Let your mind wander and then come back to the task with a fresh set of eyes. We all feel happier after spending some time with our own quiet thoughts.

    Beautiful morning walk
  5. Do something you love! Whether itā€™s eating your favorite snack, grabbing lunch with a girlfriend, or catching up with your favorite show. Take that time and do something you will feel relaxed and happy with.

Smiling is the easiest way to spread happiness

Well, there you have it. When I am in a rut, I turn my frustrations into joy. To leave you with a quote on the Tuesday. “Whatā€™s broken can be mended. Whatā€™s hurt can be healed. And no matter how dark it gets, the sunā€™s gonna rise again.ā€ -Meredith Grey
