Currently #56

Hello All! Happy Wednesday and happy September!

I hope you had a wonderful and fulfilling Labor Day weekend. Whether you said goodbye to summer, had one last cookout, or it was just a normal weekend, I hope it filled you with what you needed. I typically round out every month with my Currently post, where I recap the past month, but due to TWO posts about my trip to Italy, we are starting the month of by recapping last August.

Here’s what the eighth month of the year looked like for me.

What I’ve Been Up To:

August began with our family’s trip of a lifetime to Italy. We saw Rome, Florence, Venice, and Capri. You can read about our time away in two parts. If you missed it, part one can be read here and part two can be found here.

Once we returned it was a bit of a whirlwind with people starting new jobs, moving, or heading back to school, plus throw in getting back to work and you have a busy few weeks. However, we still managed to squeeze in some end of summer fun!

I enjoyed a final Guardians night game of the season. This was the second one I went to this year and third overall, and they won the night game!

Guards win!

I also enjoyed lots of walks to some of my favorite spots around my home.

Our city had their annual festival that I both worked at and got to attend. Their chalk walk is one the highlights of the event and some of the artwork was incredible.

I enjoyed some summer staples with burger, fries and ice cream by the water.

Plus, we made a stop to our County Fair where we saw the livestock, vendors, and enjoyed some fair food too!

I also found some new spots to run and hit a new record for distance.

Overall, it was a packed full month in the best way possible.

What I’m Wearing:

I wore a lot of shorts and lightweight tops while I was on vacation that I could mix and match. This helped me save space while packing and it was convenient for the hot days we experienced.

I did have a few fun outfits, like this white set which was a skirt and top and this long, flowy dress from Old Navy. This dress felt great in the cool evening.

We had a few days of cooler weather, so I did break out the long sleeve shirt and shorts combo for days off. I know I will be wearing this combo often as we go through the transitional weather coming up.

I even got to wear my go-to white blazer before Labor Day for work.

What I’m Reading: I read so many books this past month due to my travels, so I have lots of recommendations for you. Let’s get into them:

Hotel Nantucket- I read the Hotel Nantucket by Elin Hilderbrand to start off the month. It’s all about a woman who is tasked with hiring a staff and running a hotel for the season in Nantucket. If you have read any of Hilderbrand’s other works, you will find some Easter eggs and references to her other works. This book featured an ensemble cast with so many different personalities and a supernatural element too. This was a fast read for me and definitely worth picking up to read on your next vacation.

The Second Chance Hotel– Sierra Godfrey’s The Second Chance Hotel was the perfect book to have on my phone while we were on vacation. I was able to read it while we were traveling from place to place on trains, boats or planes. I always like to have a book on my phone so I have something to read if I’m waiting for something as opposed to scrolling mindlessly through social media. Back to the book, it follows the story about a young woman escaping her life and traveling across Europe, she’s about to end her trip in a small town in Greece, that is until the hotel she is staying at falls into her and another guest’s lap. They decide to run it for the season, but when her old life is calling her back, she must decide if she wants to stay in Greece or return to America. It was such a fun, travel read and so good to enjoy in the summer!

Flying Solo– I listened to Flying Solo by Linda Holmes while I went on a lot of runs or walks over the past month and it was good, but not a great read. It’s about a woman who goes to clean out her great-aunt’s house once she dies and comes across an item that has a bit of a mystery to it. While she is cleaning out the house, she reconnects with an old boyfriend, spends time with her childhood friend and has a few moments of self discovery along the way. The book went in a few different directions which made it hard to follow as I was listening to it, so that may have changed my feelings about the book if I read it. But there were also some parts that were hard to relate to as the woman was in her forties and still looking for love and I’m not at that point in my life. It was a good book to listen to, but it wasn’t my favorite.

First Lie WinsFirst Lie Wins by Ashley Elston is a mystery and thriller that keeps you guessing. It’s all about a woman in a new relationship, but there’s a twist, she didn’t meet her new man unexpectedly. She was meant to meet him. Without giving too much away, this is a spy/undercover thriller with lots of different characters that bounces back and forth between the past and present, so you have to pay attention while reading, however, it’s a great change of pace if you are looking for a palette cleanser between books.

Sandwich– I had heard about Sandwich by Catherine Newman from several different bloggers and decided to give it a try and ultimately it wasn’t the best book for me. It’s all about a woman who goes on her traditional family vacation to Cape Cod with her husband, growing children and ailing parents. The book runs the course of the week and is told from the mother’s perspective about where she is at in life and her feelings about what she has accomplished. The writing was very well done and I loved hearing about the traditions and settings, but it was just hard to relate to as a young woman.

What I’m Watching– I haven’t had too much time to watch tv but I have been enjoying a few movies and tv shows including:

Emily in Paris-. Season Four began with five episodes, each about 30 minutes each. You can binge them all at once or spread them out like I did to make them last longer. The fashion, storylines and drama was upped this season and it didn’t disappoint. Emily had some incredible outfits this season.

This season was so good!

It Ends with Us– My best friend and I both read the book and we decided to make it a girls date and see the movie, It Ends with Us. There were definitely some changes between the book and movie, but I’m glad I read and saw them both. I think the casting was well done and it was cool to see the characters come to life on the big screen.

What I’m Cooking– I didn’t do too much cooking since I spent a lot of the month traveling, but I have enjoyed some tasty stir frys.

I also have been grilling out toward the end of summer. I do have a few new cookbooks that I have yet to go through and plan on making some recipes from them soon!

I also made the delicious grilled chicken salad. The salad had cucumbers, radishes, oranges and grapes. It was so filling and healthy too!

What Inspires Me– A friend sent me this reminder and I think it’s so important to keep in mind as we head into a new season of life and to remember to slow down.

Also, for anyone heading back to school or to the classroom, another reminder too!

What I Accomplished– I crossed off  almost everything off my summer bucket list. Here’s a look at it currently.

I also hit my goal of running 9 miles this month which I was very proud of.

Goals from Last Month– This month was so busy between our family trip and soaking up the last bit of summer and going through some transitions, I was so happy to have made it through the month.

My garden has been coming along well and although, I didn’t get as nearly as many veggies as I hoped, I still got some!

Goals for this Month– After a busy summer, I am looking to getting back to some of my old routines and establish new ones. I am also looking forward to spending more time with friends and maybe coming up with some new hobbies or things to do.

Post work runs brought me down to the water.

Whew, August was a packed full month and this is just a look into it. I hope this next month brings new routines, rhythms, and adventures, but most importantly, growth. What are your goals for the month ahead? I would love to hear them.

Have a wonderful week, see you back here on Friday!

Friday Favorites #99

Hello all!

Happy Friday! I hope you had a great week and are doing something fun this summer weekend.

Before we begin the weekend, I want to share some things I have been loving this week as I link up with with Erika and Andrea.

We are in the middle of a heat wave with temperatures in the 90’s. Summer nights have set in which means ice cream runs- YUM!

The theme this week of favorites is new! You will see what I mean as we get into this week’s favorites!

New Kate Spade bag- I got this bag from Kate Spade for my birthday and it’s already been used a lot. It’s the perfect size to carry all the extra things you may not be able to fit in a purse (like a light jacket, planner, things to be mailed etc.) or if you are running errands and need a spot to throw all the extras. It’s also a great bag to use for a spare change of clothes. I often will have an extra outfit to wear after work if I have plans that requires a change. Not only is the size great, but so are the colors of the purse. This has been the perfect summer tote!

Moroccan Oil Shampoo and Conditioner– If you have been following along for a while then you know whenever I travel, I always like to use sample products to try out other brands before I make a purchase. I recently tried this Moroccan Oil shampoo and conditioner and really loved how it felt on my hair. After washing my hair, it felt silkier and smoother and that feeling didn’t go away for almost 24 hours. I also really loved the scent. I love the products I am using for my hair now, but I wouldn’t be opposed to trying this again in a travel size.

New Running Sneakers– Sticking with new items, I got these new sneakers for running and they have been a favorite. My brother picked them out for me. They have a ton of support, are comfortable, and I love the colors of the sneakers. I got the New Balance Fresh Foam 880s. They have been great running sneakers especially as I prepare for another race. I put a lot of miles on my old sneakers from last year, so I will be using those sneakers for the gym and these for running.

Mother of the Bride- If you are looking for a cute, rom com this summer, I have a recommendation! Mother of the Bride on Netflix was a hit for my mom and I! It’s all about a mother who helps prepare her daughter for her destination wedding. They arrive in Thailand only to find out the groom’s father is an ex of the mother’s. There’s a lot of messy history, but can they put their differences aside for their children? You will have to watch to find out. Super cute, summer movie for a girl’s night.

New Summer Sandals- I was on the hunt for a new pair of summer sandals that could be dressed up or down and I found them through DSW, are we surprised? These are the sandals I got. They are comfortable and supportive. I love the neutral color of black and I love how they can be dressed up with a sundress or skirt or dressed down with shorts or jeans. I know I will be getting  a lot of use out of them this summer.

That’s a peak into some things I have been loving this past week. What are some things that have brought you joy!? Share them with me in the comments below!

Happy Friday!

New York City in 13.5 Hours

Hello everyone! Happy July!

I hope you had a Fourth of July yesterday. Although, I was working, I still enjoyed time with family and some good grilling and fireworks too! It was a great way to round off America’s birthday!

These past few weeks have been so busy with trips, time with family and work, so I’m a little behind with sharing about some recent trips, so today I’m catching you all up about them.

My boyfriend surprised me with a day trip to New York City for my birthday, but there was a slight catch. We did NYC in 13.5 hours and were up for about 24 hours to make it happen. If you are planning to do the Big Apple in a day, it is possible and affordable and here’s how we did it.

Central Park in the morning

We both have been to New York City before (I’ve only been in the city in the winter at Christmastime so this was my first time in the in the summer), so we have seen the big sights, but we wanted still to hit all the big stops together.

We left at 1:30 in the morning to drive to a bus station about four hours away, from there we took a bus into the city (where we caught a few hours of sleep) where they dropped us off in Midtown at 9:30 and then we hit the ground running (literally).

All I had with me was my Lululemon Cross body which was a huge lifesaver and truly all I needed. I packed a lot in there, from glasses, chargers, sanitizer, chapstick, a little body spray and then cash and credit card and I used it all through the day.

All I had for a day in the city!

I also can’t recommend enough wearing comfortable shoes and clothes as we walked a lot (I’ll show you my final stats at the end of the post).

The weather was perfect for our day in the city with temperatures in the 70’s and partly cloudy, not too sunny or hot, we truly couldn’t have asked for a better day.

First sights of the city.

We made a list of all the top things we wanted to see and added to it throughout the day.

Here’s a look at our completed list.

We started the day with a walk-through Central Park, we took our first subway of the day to get there and then grabbed a classic New York Style bagel as we made our way to 30 Rock and NBC News.

Bagels for breakfast!
So many cream cheese options!
30 Rock!
Hello NBC!

Then we headed to St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Time Square.

St. Patrick’s showing off!
The inside.
Times Square!

After taking in the sights, we hit the New York Public Library (where I had to reminisce about Carrie and Big from Sex and the City).

Then it was off to the iconic Macy’s where we checked out every floor (but didn’t buy anything).

Macy’s!

We made a stop to Penn Station and Madison Square Garden.

Madison Square Garden!

By this point we were hungry, so we got some classic New York Style pizza and ate in Herald Square and people watched for a piece.

Classic pizza for lunch!

I had my Serena Van Der Woods moment in Grand Central Station and then we decided to take a subway to catch the Staten Island Ferry.

I was having a moment in my Gossip Girl era.
Another view from inside!

This was one of our favorite parts of the day since we both have never done it before and you got to see the city from a different perspective and spend some time on the water. We passed the Statue of Liberty on our way back.

Another view of the city
Statue of Liberty

After we were back in the city, we stopped by Battery Park and saw the 9/11 Memorial.

As we made our wayback to Midtown we walked along the Hudson River which was a scenic way to make our way back to the city.

A late afternoon stroll.

We also stopped by the Highline, which is a park above the city which offered the most beautiful views, we popped into Chelsea Market to see all the vendors, shops and restaurants.

The highline

One of my favorite things about walking through the city is seeing all the different restaurants and stores and shops and how unique they all are tucked throughout the city. There were so many cute neighborhood spots I would have loved to check our if time permitted.

So many cute spots.

By this time it was around 5:00 and we knew our time in the city was coming to a close so we grabbed ice cream and plotted the next few hours which included stops to both Chinatown and Little Italy (which we took the subway to get there too).

Afternoon pick me up!
Chinatown
Little Italy

We then took a subway to get back to Midtown, however, we ended up in Brooklyn, so after a little bit of a longer subway ride (which felt great to sit after lots of walking), we caught the sunset as we made our way back to the city for dinner at a 24 hour diner.

Sunset back in the city
Our dinner spot.
And dinner!

After dinner, which was breakfast for dinner, we made a final stop in Times Square to see it in its glory at night, before it was back to the bus station to catch our bus back home.

Times Square at night

Our bus was delayed which made it not so fun after being up for hours with dying phones. Thankfully, it arrived, and we made it on and caught some sleep as we bussed back.

Here’s a look at my final stats according to my Apple Watch…over 18 miles and close to 50,000 steps. My legs definitely were tired by the end of the day.

Final stats of the day!

This was such a packed full day, but the absolute best gift and surprise from my boyfriend! Truly one of the best gifts he has ever given me. We have been doing more experiences rather than gifts for holidays and birthdays which we both enjoy.

So many outdoor dining spots.

The biggest things we learned from this trip is that you CAN do NYC in a day and hit all the top spots, almost everything we did was free! The only things we paid for were food, a few subway rides and then our bus and a few souvenirs (those were for me). Make sure you wear comfortable clothes and shoes especially if you plan on doing lots of walking which we did.

The City bustling.

I loved our time in the city from sunup to sundown. If you are on the fence about doing a day trip to a city, I highly recommend it. Just make sure you have a plan in place, you know your city (my boyfriend knows the city very well) and be open to going with the flow.

The streets in the evening.

I’m already counting down to the next time I am in the city!

Tell me: what questions do you have about my trip? Let me know in the comments below! See you back here on Friday for a new edition of Friday Favorites!

Look of the Day #68

LOTD

It’s September!!

Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE summer but once September hits, I can’t wait for fall. The only problem with that is even though it’s September, it’s still super warm where I live. Although, I want to break out all the flannels, jeans, and boots, its still 80 degrees outside. Haha! Therefore, I am still wearing shorts, t-shirts and summer styles of clothing for the next few weeks but don’t worry-my white is put away until next year. Haha!

With that being said, here is what I am wearing today.

Getting in all the summer outfits

I got this fun silk-like blouse from Old Navy a few years ago and I love to wear it with shorts (black or white), capris, or even a pair of jeans in cooler weather.

Since it reached mid-80’s today, I decided to wear a pair of black shorts from Old Navy with it. I chose black to darken the outfit a bit since we are getting closer to fall weather and moving away from summer weather.

There was a bit of a chill this morning, so I wore this fuchsia sweater over this spaghetti strap top. The pink sweater also brought out the pink accents in my top. Don’t be surprised but I also got this sweater from Old Navy...shocker right?! Haha!

To continue to transition this outfit to fall, I decided to wear these fun dressy sneakers with my outfit rather than a pair of sandals. I got mine for sale at Target.

Although the weather is still so nice, and I am trying to enjoy it as much as I can, I still try to try to transition my wardrobe. I transition in simple ways like by wearing darker colors, closed toe shoes, or adding sweaters or long sleeves or pants to my wardrobe.

I can’t wait for fall to be in full swing.

When do you start to transition your wardrobe from season to season?

Look of the Day #67

LOTD

Hi All!

It’s officially back to school season as well as the last week of August. Boy, did the summer months fly by! I have to admit, with classes back in session, I am looking forward to fall. From the fall outfits, festivities, and warm treats I am ready to start transitioning to the fall season. I love all the seasons but the transition from one season to the next is my favorite.

Since there is only one more week left in August before Labor Day, I’m trying to wear white as much as I can. This outfit is perfect for one last summer event or heading to class if you are back to classes like me.

Wearing all the white I can before Labor Day

You may recognize this top and that’s because I have worn it before with this outfit. I love to try and find clothing that can be reborn in any season and this top is the perfect example of something that can be worn all year round. I love the material as well as the small striped pattern.

The top is dark so I decided to balance it out with these white shorts-one last hurrah before Labor Day-yes, I am a firm believer of not wearing white after Labor Day. I love how the two materials and colors balance each other out.The top is from Francesca’s and the bottoms are from Marshall’s, both from a few years back but still in great condition.

Lastly, to top of this fun outfit, I decided to wear my slip on fashionable sneakers. I got mine from Target for a great price. I love how I can wear them transitioning from summer to fall. I  wanted to change it up to accommodate the warm weather instead of wearing sneakers or converse. These shoes are more dresses and not as casual. They are also supportive for walking around campus all day.

That’s a peak into what I am wearing this last week of August. With Labor Day coming up, what are your plans for the weekend? I’ll be at school relaxing and catching up on homework. Have a great weekend!

Look of the Day #63

LOTD

Today’s outfit is all about sporty chic. Don’t get me wrong, I love to dress up for work and other outings as well as look cute when I am out and about. I found the perfect mix for both sporty and chic with this workout outfit.

When I haven’t been working, I have been on the go, running errands, or dropping my siblings off at sporting events. Sometimes, I feel like I am a soccer mom especially when I am in this workout outfit and dropping them off at practice in a mini van! Haha!!!

Always on the go

So here are the details, I got this workout shirt from Nike. I like how it is loose fitting and longer, it is not skin tight, and it is very breathable. Not to mention, it is also very comfortable. These are all qualities that I am looking for when I am shopping for workout clothes. I also love the white, I can wear this top with so many outfits. I can wear them with athletic shorts in the summer, leggings in the winter, or crop pants in the spring or fall.  I love to mix and match them.

Trying to be sporty

I got these black shorts from MarleyLilly, my favorite part about them? They are monogrammed!! How cute are my initials on these shorts!? These shorts go perfect with my white workout top. These shorts are good quality and the monogram dresses them up a bit, you can wear these shorts out and about and not look like you are heading to the gym.

Monogrammed shorts

And if I didn’t love monogrammed things enough, my black baseball hat is also monogrammed. This hat can be worn with other outfits and not just sporty ones, but I liked tying in all my black and white and monograms in one look.

Monogrammed hat

These sneakers are also practical for running errands or being out and about. Although, they are not matching the black and white, they certainly go with the sporty look. I got mine from the Nike store. These are my go-to sneakers for the gym. They are comfortable and long lasting. I have had them for three years and are still pleased with them.

That’s what I’m wearing on the go and in the gym. Where are you favorite places to get athletic wear from?

Look of the Day #62

LOTD

Hi All!

Today, I have another fun summer outfit for you all to enjoy today. This outfit is perfect for a day OUT of the office, at the park, at a picnic, or just going for a walk. I love the color scheme I have planned for today. Let’s jump in with the details.

A new day, a new outfit

First, you may recognize this top. I got it from Francesca’s Boutique a few years back, but it is a staple in my summer collection. I have worn it to work and dressed it up with capris or dress pants, but I have also found myself dressing it down with a pair of shorts. The material is satin which really dresses up this basic short set. The back is my favorite part! I love the details in the tuxedo bows that line the back. It’s details like these that I adore about pieces from Francesca’s!

Savoring summer

Speaking of the shorts, how cute is this mint green color?! I love the contrast between the teal and black. I got these shorts from Old Navy. As you know by now, I am a fan of Old Navy’s clothes. Their shorts are a favorite of mine. I really appreciate the length of the shorts and how they fit. I am not a fan of short-shorts. This length is perfect for a blouse or t-shirt.

I chose these dressy sneakers for the outfit for today. I was planning on walking around a lot and I needed a reliable shoe. This style of shoe is in style right now. I got my pair from Target for under $20! But, I have seen other major retailers selling them for much more. I love the design and fabric and I like how it doesn’t look like a sneaker but rather a closed toe shoe. Plus, I love how well they match with the green and black.

Thoughts on the dressy sneaker?! I am wearing them constantly this summer!

To finish of the outfit, I knew I needed something for the sold top, I decided to go with a mint green bold necklace from Old Navy to tie the whole outfit together. If you are out and about, consider grabbing a large hat like mine to keep the sun out of your face. I got this big hat from DSW, but I have seen them in many other retailers.

A bold necklace to dress up this top

That’s a peak into my closet. Next week, I am going away for a few days, but I will still be blogging. Follow me on Instagram to keep up with my latest adventure.
