Friday Favorites #75

Hello all!

Happy Friday!

We made it through the first week of January! How was your first week of the New Year? Have you started chipping away at your New Year’s Resolutions or giving yourself some grace this first week of the year? I know I enjoyed getting back into a routine and doing some cleaning, we still have all our Christmas decorations up which makes our home feel extra cozy. Regardless of how you are spending this week, I hope it’s been a good one.

I saw this quote and thought it was so timely especially if you are embracing these next few months as a slower time.

Today I’m sharing some last of holiday fun and some new favorites from this week as I link up with Erika and Andrea for another roundup of favorites for the first week of the new year!

Books Beach and Beyond– I heard about this podcast, Books Beach and Beyond in the fall but didn’t have a chance to start listening to it until the Christmas holiday. If you are a book lover like me, then you will love this podcast. Author, Elin Hilderbrand hosts the podcast with Tim Ehrenberg, and they talk to different authors about their books, where they get their inspiration from and what projects they are working on. The two hosts have interviewed Taylor Jenkins Reid, Colleen Hoover, Ann Patchett and Kristin Hannah, just to name a few. This podcast is so informative, and it gives great insight into the literary world. I really have been enjoying this podcast and hope they bring it back for season two in the new year.

A new favorite podcast

Candy Cane Lane-We watched Candy Cane Lane for a family movie night over Christmas break. The movie stars Eddie Murphy and it’s all about a man who loves Christmas. He participates in a house decorating contest, but gets caught up in signing a deal in hopes of winning, which results in some magic getting out of hand. The movie follows the classic Twelve Days of Christmas song as each of the items comes to life. There are a lot of good one-liners and fun catch phrases in the movie too. This was the perfect family movie that held everyone’s attention in my house. If you are still in the Christmas spirit, you can watch it on Amazon Prime.

Such a cute movie!

Wordle party game– We got the Wordle party game for Christmas and it has been a huge hit in our home. A few of my siblings and I play Wordle every day, so this game takes it to the next level. Up to four people can play the game. One person chooses the five-letter word, and all the players have to guess the word using the same rules as the daily game on the New York Times. If you are a fan of Wordle, this game is definitely worth the buy, plus it forces you to really put your thinking cap on.

A great family game

Mighty Patch– As far as beauty products go, the Mighty Patch has been a new favorite for me. I tried using the Mighty Patches after I got them as a gift and have been impressed with how well they work. These clear patches go over any blemishes you may have for a faster clear-up of your face. You can get them for overnight wear or daily wear. I tried a sample pack of both and found that the overnight patches work better. This product won’t solve all your acnes issues, but it does help if you are looking for a quick fix here or there.

Chopped Pomegranate Salad– I love a good salad, but I’m not one to purchase bagged salads too often due to the expense, I would rather make a salad with vegetables I already have at home and on hand. However, we picked up a few chopped salads to go with some appetizer nights and they were a hit. I really enjoyed this pomegranate salad, it’s a perfect blend of flavors for fall and winter.  We enjoyed this salad with some other snack bites, but it could also go great with a pizza night or with a protein like chicken or steak.

That’s a look into some of the things that I have been loving this week, from the last bit of holiday fun to games, beauty products and food, there was something for everyone. I hope you have a relaxing and cozy weekend as we begin a new month.

Summer Favorites

Happy Tuesday!

I hope you all had enjoyable weekends. I was out of town this past weekend, doing some work for school as well as celebrating one of my friend’s birthdays an seeing lots of college friends. It was such a fun weekend to see everyone and catch up!

Today’s post is all about my summertime favorites, from music I’m listening to, shows I’m binge watching, fashion trends, and summer snacks.

Favorite Music: Summer Time = Country Music. I have been adding to my country loving playlist all summer long, it’s a perfect blend of Thomas Rhett, Luke Combs, Darius Rucker and more. I love playing it while I’m at work or road tripping.

Love me some country music in the summer

Favorite Binge Worthy TV Show: Outlander has been my go-to this summer, My friend Bailey got me hooked on it and now I can’t stopped. SO good. I can’t wait until the next season comes out.

Who else has binge watched?!

Favorite Drink: I have been drinking all the water this summer, but to change it up I love adding some lemon, mint, cucumber, or other fresh fruits for a refreshing taste. Plus, its great for detoxing.

Drink for the day-water, strawberries, lemon and mint.Delicious and refreshing

Favorite Food: I am all about the salads in the summer. Check out my favorite summer salads here!

Fresh salads in the summer

Favorite Beauty Products: In the summer, I am all about minimal makeup. Unless I am at work, I am just wearing the basics, a bit of foundation and mascara are my go-tos. I have also been growing my hair out for the summer and use less product on it. During the school year, I would be straightening it several times a week and using lots of product, in the summer I have been letting it dry naturally and leaving it down. There is something refreshing about natural hair.

Minimal makeup for summer for the win

Favorite Summer Activity: Nothing says summer like going for strolls in the evening followed by ice cream. I am always down for an ice cream run.

I always love going on hikes in the morning or evening

Favorite Spot: Whenever I get a chance to relax, you will find me outside by the pool reading, it doesn’t happen every day but I love being by the pool with a book in my hand. I have been reading a lot this summer and I can’t wait to share my summer book review with you.

Favorite place to read at the end of the day

That’s just a glimpse into my favorite things in the summer. The carefree days of summer are fleeting. Soak up all moments and make them into memories. See you on Thursday for another look of the day!

Summer Salads

Happy Tuesday Everyone!

I hope your week’s are off to a great start! One thing you may or may not know about me is that I am a food lover! I love trying different things, whether it’s sweet or savory…although I prefer sweet! Haha! I hope to bring more recipes to the blog this year, whether it’s meals, sweet treats, or side dishes. I love to try new recipes and I would love to share them with you!

One of my goals for this summer is to start healthier habits, one of the ways I am working to achieve this is by making more healthier dishes.  I prefer to eat at home rather than going out, I like to know what I am putting in my body. Salads are a huge component of what I eat daily. Whether it’s pre-made salads from the grocery store for lunch or a large tossed salad for dinner, I try to eat a salad for a meal each day.

Today, I am going to share three easy salads to make for lunch or dinner. They are easy to make, nutritious, and filling. Let’s begin!

  1. Caprese Salad

What You Need:

Spinach

Sliced Tomatoes (1-3 depending on how much you want to make)

Mozzarella Cheese (1/2- 1 full ball depending on how much you want to make)

Olive Oil (for drizzling)

Balsamic Vinegar (for drizzling)

Oregano (for drizzling)

Basil (for drizzling)

Garlic (for drizzling)

Directions

  • Place Spinach on platter
  • Lay Sliced Tomato on top of Spinach
  • Put Mozzarella on top of Tomato
  • Drizzle your mixture of olive oil, balsamic vinegar, oregano, basil, and garlic on top of salad for taste.

All three of these salads are super easy to prepare and meal prep! You can make a big bowl of it for dinner as a side or make a large bowl for yourself and eat it for lunch for the whole week. You can easily adjust portions to what works best for you. Not only are these fun and light for summer but also healthy and filling.

Lenten Sacrifice

Hello All!

Happy Easter! I hope you all had enjoyable Easter Celebrations if you celebrate. It was so nice to get home for more than a weekend. During my time home, I was able to see family, get errands done, and relax for a few days. Today, I am back to school and ready to finish out the semester strong with the last few weeks.

Today, I wanted to take the time to share with you something that I have been working on for the last 40 days. Every year, I was always try to make my Lenten sacrifice something meaningful, whether it’s giving up fast food, desserts, or a certain thing I use every day. This year, I wanted to make a big change not only for the spiritual sacrifice but for my health. I decided to give up carbs. Now, that might seem huge and vague so let me explain it down more.

I kept this posted in my room as a reminder every day

I wanted to really challenge myself, but I also wanted to see a change in myself. While I was in Rome over spring break. I kept saying how hard it was going to be from eating delicious authentic, Italian food to go back to eating American food. I also indulged a lot while I was in Rome and I wanted to change my eating habits when I returned. I realized this would be the perfect opportunity to make changes in my diet.

When I returned from Italy (although it was a few days after Lent had started), I cut out a lot of things from my diet. I cut out bread, pasta, chips, crackers, and potatoes (I love potatoes whether it’s baked potatoes, mashed potatoes, French fries, tater tots, waffle fries etc). That’s all I cut out, so yes, I did eat a cookie here or there, some popcorn when I went to the movies, or cereal in the morning. I didn’t cut out all carbs but certain foods that I would eat daily.

It was quite a challenge. The bread and the pasta were the hardest things to not eat especially since it is in so much of our food, I couldn’t eat pizza, sandwiches, waffles, donuts, pancakes, Mac and cheese, and more foods that I would have grabbed without taking a second thought. This challenge did force me to step out of my comfort zone by eating more vegetables, fruits, and meat. With all this food out of my diet what did I eat?

For breakfast, I would often eat fruit or a bowl of cereal (yes, I know that has carbs but I needed to find a balance), for lunch in the past would typically get a grilled chicken wrap-but during Lent I would opt for just grilled chicken and lettuce instead of a wrap. For dinner I would often have a big salad with grilled chicken, or soup, or another type of meat. Although, the options of food choices would sometimes get boring, I would try to change up my meals with different fruit or vegetables.

Through the 40 days of Lent I did notice a change in myself, I had more energy and I felt more full by eating cleaner and not having a lot of processed foods in my diet. I also noticed that by reaching for water instead of a sugary drink made me feel more healthier.  I also attempted to take pictures each week to see my progress but that stopped after the second week. Plus, I didn’t necessarily do this to lose weight, but rather to sacrifice something and be healthier.

Now that my 40 days of no carbs will I go back? Yes and No. Yes, if I want waffled fries and a burger, I’m going to get waffle fries and a burger. But I want to try to eat more greens and lean meats instead of turning to bread and pasta all the time. When I am at school I eat healthier since I am on the go more and busier, however, when I am at home, it’s hard to resist homemade meals, but with summer approaching I’m going to try my best to keep choosing healthier options in my diet.

I hope this inspires you to try to make changes in your diet, it doesn’t have to be as extreme as this but maybe opting to cut out soda or fried food from your diet, you will be amazed at how you feel at the end of it. What did you give up for Lent? Would you be interested in giving up something this major?
